Enhancing Student Learning

This module provides tools and resources for teachers to use while partnering with families to enhance student learning and success. It provides information and ideas to support partnerships with families on student homework, curriculum-related activities, academic decisions, and long term planning. The integration of language and culture of students into instruction, and the New Mexico Standards are highlighted as well as ways to share them with families.

The New Mexico 3-Tiered Licensure System provides the framework for documenting teacher qualifications. In collaboration with the principal or designated administrator, New Mexico teachers are required to develop and maintain Professional Development Plans (PDPs) based on nine teacher competencies and accompanying differentiated indicators for their respective level of licensure (Level I, II or III).

This module, Enhancing Student Learning addresses New Mexico Teacher Competencies 1, 3, and 4. The competencies and relevant differentiated indicators for Master Teacher – Level III are listed below.   • Competency 1: The teacher accurately demonstrates knowledge of the content area and approved curriculum.
    Relevant Master Teacher - Level III Differentiated Indicators:
  • B. Provides clear explanations relating to lesson content and procedures in multiple ways and is aware of knowledge and preconceptions that students can bring to the subject.


  • Competency 3: The teacher communicates with and obtains feedback from students in a manner that enhances student learning and understanding.

  • A. Engages students in explaining and/or demonstrating the relevance of topics and activities.


  • Competency 4: The teacher comprehends the principles of student growth, development and learning and applies them appropriately.

  • B. Selects the most effective teaching techniques to address a variety of student learning levels, rates, styles and needs as well as diverse interests and backgrounds.
