NM Common Core Standards Primer

This standards-based education guide is designed to provide general information related to policies, practices, guiding principles and implementation efforts surrounding the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in New Mexico. It is also designed to guide steps in a pathway towards implementation of the CCSS.

Use this guide to:

  • Focus on the positive aspects of the CCSS and make them a force that lifts teaching and supports improvements in our schools.

  • Guide steps in examining and unpacking or deconstructing the CCSS and identifying strengths and shifts needed in lesson planning, unit designs and formative assessment.

  • Support conversations among educators in professional learning communities regarding what we want our students to learn, how we will know they have learned well, how we will respond to those who have learned and those who have not.

  • Facilitate discussions, conferences, and planning with students, families, school staff, and community members.

  • Reference in development of a school or district Educational Plan for Student Success (EPSS).

  • The Primer Guide is available from the Ben Lujan Leadership and Public Policy Institute and CESDP.
